In the modern world, application modernization trends shape how users interact with companies & their products. It is while creating a more significant impact on the experience that the said brands provide. Application modernization refers to modernizing your software application portfolio with innovative features while migrating applications to the cloud.
As we look toward 2023, the technology trends we hear about often are mirrored in app development: the cloud, low-code/no-code, and personalization, to name a few.

Through this article, I’ll focus on application development and cover important application modernization trends that every enterprise should note now and beyond.

Application Modernization Trends for 2023

Microservices and Containers — Helping Modernize Enterprise Applications
Legacy apps are often monolithic as they contain millions of lines of code. They are also often challenging to update and even costlier to maintain.

Though over the past several years, enterprises have adopted different approaches to modernizing such applications, microservices architecture has emerged as the winner. It structures an application as a suite of loosely coupled services that implement business capabilities. And, this allows rapid changes to create individual modules within an application, enabling rapid application updates and changes.

It is followed by containerization, where developers can create transitory production environments that can be cloned to test changes and liquidate after their purpose is served. It empowers application developers to try out new innovative ideas. Further, containers make it easier for businesses to switch between different programming frameworks or deployment platforms. It is because they are shielded from the underlying deployment environment.

The expansion of DevOps across enterprises can contribute to the increased demand for microservices and container management solutions.

Hybrid Cloud — Become Mature and Evolve

Today a vast majority of enterprises use hybrid cloud infrastructure. According to a 2022 Cisco report, 82 percent of organizations have already adopted a hybrid cloud. And 58 percent of respondents shared that they utilize two or three public cloud providers.

Hybrid digital infrastructure in the modern context would refer to workloads deployed across on-premises data centers, edge, public cloud, and SaaS platforms. Increasingly, the on-premises workloads will shift from traditional data center environments to automated, consumption-based private clouds. It would allow organizations to match resource costs to usage better while still having dedicated use of the assets.

Though, during 2023 for several enterprises, a key concern would be to improve the timeliness and quality of data-driven business decisions. And, for many of them, the proliferation of edge, SaaS & public cloud workloads has created data silos. The focus would be now on creating a consistent approach to data pipeline optimization and logistics for all organizations.

Low-code/No-code Development — To Gain More Popularity

It is perhaps the most talked-about application modernization trend for 2023. While companies need to innovate faster, there’s a demand for continuous improvement from internal (business leaders) and external (end users) stakeholders. It requires companies to fuse business & IT teams to create ways for so-called “non-technical” employees to contribute to application modernization. And, since low-code/no-code is more user-friendly and while it is also called “citizen developers,” many professional developers are using it to simplify and speed up build times.

Listed above are some of the critical trends I’ve put together (there could be more) based on my understanding and exposure.

Final Words
Looking ahead, the primary takeaway for enterprises from this application modernization trend would be to make development faster and more agile. It maps the user expectations for performance and ease of use. In 2023 and beyond, companies will need to balance speed and delivering experiences that users demand. They will need a specialist legacy application modernization services partner who can develop scalable and repeatable models to speed up cloud migration. It would be with the necessary tools & visibility to enhance & accelerate the modernization processes.
